OBJECT_DESCRIPTION_EN :
The puppet has some specific elements that are part of the show dramaturgy. For example, its eyes are painted on stage using a pencil which, throughout the show, represents an association with the censorship pencil, which before 25 April was used by PIDE to censor texts.
This puppet's costume is structured in paper, with the puppet writing on its own dress, a symbol of its personality, fragile paper that can be torn, but can also be put back together.
The puppet's quality of movement is similar to that of a human being, creating empathy with the spectator, with the child watching, with the children who are part of the spectator's universe. It leads them to think about freedom in childhood or its conditioning, caused by the absence of freedom, the lack of schooling, the presence of children in armed conflicts. This sets the tone for a more general narrative in this artistic creation.
The concept of ‘heart-rock, heart-paper or heart-scissors’ that motivates the narrative of the show is based on the metaphor of the game ‘Rock, Paper and Scissors’. It reflects the defense and adaptation mechanism that children adopt in response to traumatic contexts, and can evolve from a ‘paper-heart’ (fragile and vulnerable) to a ‘rock-heart’ (hard and insensitive) or a ‘scissor-heart’ (aggressive and dominant), depending on the nature of the environment and the pressure they are under.
This artistic approach, which uses the puppet itself as a vehicle for the message, makes it possible to tackle serious and delicate themes with subtlety and poetry.
Alma becomes a living, tangible symbol of the struggle of thousands of children for the right to freedom, education, and protection from violence and injustice.
OBJECT_CONTEXT_EN :
Alma is inspired in a Palestinian girl of the same name who emerges from the rubble of her bombed-out house, asking for her family to be saved first.
